Our Pyramids,
and the Ghost Town Pripyat

The Final Checkpoint

This is the final checkpoint. Protective radiation suits and special permission is required to go beyond this point...I am not that curious.

The sarcophagus will remain radioactive for at least 100,000 years. The age for the pyramids of Egypt is 5,000 to 6,000 years. Each cultural epoch left something to humanity, something immortal; the Judaic epoch left us the Torah and the Bible, Greek culture...philosophy, the Romans contributed law, and we are leaving a Sarcophagus, a structure that is going to outlive all other signs of our epoch and may last longer then pyramids.

Ghost Town - Pripyat

The Ghost Town Pripyat

With a four kilometer leap we are at the gates of the ghost town Pripyat. It was founded in 1970 and is located only four kilometers north of the reactor. At one time about 48,000 people lived here, who certainly loved their town. In 1986, it was a modern, green, and cozy place to live.

The Ghost Town Pripyat

Silence

Pripyat today might be an attractive place for tourists. Some tourists companies have been trying to arrange tours to Pripyat, but the first group of tourists found the silence unnerving and downright SPOOKY. And it is. They charged 1,200 Hryvnas (approximately $585.00, depending upon the exchange rate) for a two-hour excursion into the town. After some 15 minutes the tourists wanted to flee to the outside world. The silence here is deafening.
