Comments: Did two tours on Adak, 1954 and '70/71. Reeves stopped
at Amchitka carrying me back and forth to Adak. Query: A shipmate
of mine was involved in a project to explode 10 kilotons of tnt
to measure pressures and such. This would have been in the mid to
late '60s and was supposed to take place on Amchitka. Anyone out
there who knows about such goings on?
Lost track of my shipmate. Give me a yell if you want to swap
tales.

there were only a dozen of us on the whole island for a couple of
weeks. Loneliness isn't the word. Our thoughts went out to the
poor souls who were there during WW 11

Comments: I was one of the PMC employees there during the ROTHR
years. I think 1988-89 or so... not positive. During my time
there I operated water/wastewater systems and the trash truck. We
did 2 month on/one month off tours. I also made fairly regular
trips up to the North End. Always in fog ... I remember the one
time I drove that road when it WASN'T foggy and being scared at
the long dropoff next to the road. Although I had driven the road
many times I had never known how far I'd fall if I went off road.
Was a bit more careful after that.

I remember how rarely the clouds/fog would part and the sun would
peek out for a few minutes. And the constant wind, which could
rip a car door right out of your hand (and sometimes break the
hinges) if you parked facing the wrong way!

I remember the $0.75 price for beer at the bar, excellent food in
the chow hall. Visiting the Canninkin, Milrow, and Longshot nuke
test sites (for awhile I would take monthly water samples and
send them to the DOE for radiation testing). Puffins, killer
whales, foxes, and RATS ... we had one guy we called 'ratkiller'
since it was his job to keep the rat population down.

Some people would call it a hellish place to work but I recall a
sort of misty, windblown beauty to the place. I'd be happy to
hear from anyone who shared time with me there.

Comments: When our daughter-in-laws family moved into their home
a photo album was left by the previous family that they no longer
wanted. There is a photo from a magazine of a Liberator and it
talks about the Amchitka field. There is a Navy Chapel church
service bulletin dated Sept. 10, 1944, US Naval Air Facility
(Navy 318). The Chaplain's name was Taylor. All photos show snow,
air fields, ocean, barrecks, P38 #64, a submarine in drydock,
wallruses, P38 #80 and more. We would love to know exactly where
the photos were taken. There are many photos of military
personel. If you could please help us solve this mystery we would
gladly e-mail any photos for you to view.

Comments: As I was reading all of the guest entries, I was
enthralled to run across two of them written by one of my
co-workers and compadries by the name of Jim Riley.

We were stationed on Amchitka in 1948-49
and worked as operaters of the stations powerplant. There were
four of us, as he mentioned, but we also had a civilian mechanic
who originated from GA. Was his name Thornton?

I too, remember the fighter airstrip that dipped into the bay and
if I remember correctly, that was for a good reason. They would
land seaplanes in the bay and would actually taxi them out onto
the runway. There were indeed many jeeps and other vehicles park
along the full length of this runway. I also understood that
there were many WWII Vehicles that were turned loose at the top
of the runway and allowed to roll off into the deep bay.

Jim I'm glad that you remembered Miller's first name as Calvin
and if you remember, we called Erickson (Whitey) due to his blond
hair.

I didn't remember you guys calling me Dusty though. Must be
because of my age. Coarse, your no spring chicken yourself.

Do you remember Gerski, our power lineman who had found a drum of
deicing fluid for aircraft and was straining it through bread to
make it drinkable. I understand that it finally caused him to go
partially blind.

Then there was the chubby civilian plumber who had the hut next
to ours. He was quite a character also.

I could remenise about that six months I spent on amchitka for
hours, but I had better close and put these old bones to bed.

(June 2004) as part of the CRESP science plan. I saw only one
tree while on the island and only one rat. Had fun driving along
the runway in an ATV and checking out the nuclear bomb test
sites. Unfortunately didn't manage to fish for Dolly Vartan in
Cannikin Lake!

Comments: I spent time on Amchitka (total of 15 months) while on
active duty as an OS2 in the Navy(FSSC-ROTHR) from Sept 1990
until the decommissioning of Detachment 1. I have lots of
pictures, logged lots of hiking/exploring miles and memories that
will remain with me forever. Amchitka was an awesome place to
discover and an incredible experience. From the huge rats, the
otters & eagles, not to mention the historic grave markers &
building remains, I loved it all. The "Polar Bear Club" was the
best, and coldest event in my Navy career! I'd really like to go
back someday and see it all again.
P.S. To the person who made the comments about the huge
trees...they were still alive & well & about knee-high, in front
of the old O Club when I left!

Remember taking out the crew to do the site survey for the new
base. Coast Guard flews us in on C130's. We stayed in the two
story terminal building. Folks from AEC hosted, we had the best
food...two weeks there as I recall. Fishing was great and the
history was astounding. From WWII to the nuclear tests.

Would love to hear from anyone who was on that trip.

Comments: My dad recently passed away & while packing his things
to bring to my home, I found an interesting ring. It is a silver
band, made from a silver half dollar. On the outside of the band
is "AMCHITKA 1943". The letters are very neat, but appear to be
hand done. Inside the band the "Half Dollar" raised letters of
the coin are still legible. My dad was a WWII veteran, Army 13th
infantry. I'm not sure if he was actually there or how he may
have gotten the ring. I have not seen his name listed on Amchitka
veteran sites. He was discharged in Oct 1943 in San Bernadino CA.
Any info about ring souvenirs made from coins? Just find the ring
very interesting and I have been researching Amchitka.

my tours were really an adventure for
this city kid who was raised in the
suburbs of Los Angeles during the
depression era. Hope to hear from any-

Comments: I spent 7 wks. on Amchitka in 1988, during the ROTHR
project and it's stark beauty has left a lasting impression. My
husband Rick, was hired by Chris Berg of TBR-JV in `86 as Crusher
Supt. to prepare the base for the TX site (transmitter site) on
the north end of the island. He was there until Aug 88, then was
called back in `90 to help demobilize the project. It was an
unforgettable experience for both of us. Unfortunately it was
just another monumental waste of taxpayer dollars. I have many
pictures for anyone that would like some emailed to them.

Comments: I was stationed on Amchitka in 1942,1943, 1944. I was
in the U>S> Navy and recall a number of things about the island
at that time. My battle station was at the end of the large
bomber strip that was made of mesh and landed B52 and B-29==Also
we had P=38 fighters and P-40's.
I was a Navy storekeeper and unloaded many ships that came into
the harbor. I swam in one of the lakes on the island which was
located ast the end of the bomber airfield. I fished in the
harbor and caught over 1000 lbs of Halibut in one afternoon ( 6
guys) I also gigged trout in the stream that ran into the Bering
Sea. It was the only fresh food we had at the time. I slept in a
tent with 4 others for 6 months, during that time my bare feet
never touched the ground( all mud) .Most of the time on the
island we slept in Quesent huts, about 10 men to each unit. I
played softball at the only field on the island and also umpired
a number of games for the Army guys. i was 17 years old when i
arrived there from Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Wheni was shipped out
from Seattle the ship followed the inside passage. A beautiful
trip.

conducted in the 1960s. My father was the chief soils scientist
on those early tests, responsible for monitoring any radiation
that might have leeched from those underground tests. This spring
my nephew, a high school junior, had to complete an oral history
project and he interviewed my father on his role in, and opinion

might be interested in conducting a more in-depth interview as to
the Why and How Amchikta was selected as a nuclear test site.

My unit, 924th QM Co. Boat (avn) also operated two 104' offshore

a storm that blew away the airbase anemometer at 130 mph. That
was quite a ride in a 42' boat, even behind the little
breakwater!

Seattle. I remember Constantine Harbor. At that time there was
beached freighter at the mouth of the harbor. Also there was a
fighter strip that went almost to the water and on both sides of
the strip were lined with jeeps and trucks. I did a lot of hiking
and remember the rats, blue fox and a multitude of sea otters. My
detachment commander was Captain Edward P Reynolds who also flew
the base C47. The only women I saw during my tour were two flight
attendants on a Reeve Aleutian Airways that was forced to land
because of inclement weather I believe at Adak. I did enjoy my
tour of duty there. I did enjoy this webpage and hope to hear
from other Amchitka tourists.

Comments: I had the opportunity to work with Universal Services
on Amchitka Island from October 71 to March 72. This was during
the pre and post Cannikin test time frame. During this time I had
the chance to explore much of the island. The place that stands
out most is the WWII Officers Club. This is where the Amchitka
Forest was planted; several pine trees planted in the early 40s
had grown to the amazing height of 3 (three) feet.
Amchitka is truely an amazing and starkly beautiful place.

Comments: I spend time on Amchitka in 1991-1992. I was stationed
there
while in the Navy (FSSC-ROTHR). I spend a total of nine months
there. My tour was suppose to be only 3 months, but I loved it
there so much that I volunteered to stay an additonal 6 months.
While there I ventured around both the north and south end of the
island. The island contains alot of history, which remains
forgoten are unknown. While on many of my walk abouts, I would
find items from WWII ranging from airplane
parts, jeep parts, worn dog tags, bombs, and bullets. Scars
from past nuclear test, also remain present (cannikin lake).
While on the island, the old church build during WWII, finally
fell. A few building from the War still remained
standing when I left (hangers and the officers club). After
being subjected to War and 3 Nuclear test (largest ever conduct
by the US), maybe we can finally leave this place alone. Jeep
tracks still remain embedded in the tuntra, and
parts of the old communication line from the south end to the
north end still remains (used to alert planes on the south end,
when the Japanese took off from Kiska). Soon after I left the
island, the Navy closed the base. I wish
one day I could go back there again. I'll never forget my
time there. If I had a scanner, I would share my pictures.
When I left, I had 15 rolls of film/pictures

Comments: Actually, I got here as a result of e-mail from the
Shemya page. Somewhere around here I have pictures of my one and
only trip in and out of Amchitka, 1968 I believe. On one trip
between Elmendorf and Shemya, we were diverted into Amchitka to
haul some test equipment back to Nellis AFB in Las Vegas. I'll
try to find the pictures and get them scanned in if you're
interested.

Comments: George,
You're getting to be an expert on the military in the Aleutians.
Enjoy all the mail.
I had the pleasure of landing on Amchitka in a Reeve Aleutian
Airway DC3 in 1969 on
the way back to Shemya after leave. Didn't see much and didn't
stay long.
Ron
