Saw a TV programme about bomber 31 that went missing in WWII, and had to know more about the area.

I will be visiting Kodiak Island My interest in Attu is personal My deceased uncle, served in the army and was sent to Attu. Upon arrival all Japenese dead. He related this to my mother. I hope to visit the island during my visit this juy-Aug. My son is serving in the navy and I have deep respect and reverence for all who serve and have served our country. Thank you for showing such love and respect for those who serve and have served. I hope to find out more details about my uncle and his duty.

it has been interesting. i was stationed on attu and adak and amchitka 1942-1945 with the11th air force 77th bomb squadron.have tried to obtain ant information about this unit but have not had any luck.will keep trying.

father was part of the mobile maintenance company who supported the four divisions during the awaking hr's of Normandy. Where can I fin Info on this company.
I was searching through Attu and Kiska Sites and ran across this page. To my suprise I found the same diary of Nebu Tatsuqughi. My father Staff Sergent Anthony C. Novak was with the 6th Battlion Co. C. at Attu Kiska and Adak. He brought home a translated copy of this diary. I wonder if all of the GI's were given a copy? Scot Novak

Served 1964-1965 on Shemya with USAFSS 6984th. Went out to Attu for 3-day R&R. Caught a lot of Salmon. Climbed "Terrible Mountain" (?) picked up some souvenirs. Got stranded due to fog and R&R extended to 5 days.. Great hospitality from the Loran station crew !
My aunt was married to Clarence Fridley, who was one of the 7 air crew who died on the last flight of Bomber 31. Today we met with her late husband's sister and her family. If anyone out there has any information about Clarence, (Dig) Fridley, or the last flight of Bomber 31, I'd love to hear from you and to share the information with them. Thanks. I was looking for info or photos on the 61st seabee bat. my Dad was in the 61st seabees. 1943 to 45 I think. I'm not sure of the year. My Dad is still alive. He's 83 now and can't tell me much. But he like's to look at the old photo's. I would like some help if anyone knows anything. I want to show my dad what I found. Thank you. I like your site very much. I was stationed on Attu Lorsta in 1973. I had a great time. I wis that I had read 'The Capture of Attu' complied by Robert J. Mitchell while I was up there. A great book with firsthand accounts by the people who fought there. I going back someday when I figure out how.

Was aboard USS HITCHITI ATF 103 to deliver helium for weather ballons, beer,pop and fuel. Weather was rough and anchored three days before we made a run at the pier. Went duck hunting with sawed off shotguns and #8 shot. Ithink we had cold cuts for chow that eve.

An uncle, by marrage, was wounded in the early days of the battle for Attu. It was very difficult for these troops as they were poorly dressed for that climate. He survives to this day with shrapnal loged in his neck.

My dad was a T-Sgt in the 4th inf. reg. He was shipped to Attu as a young man but came back as a 100% disabled vet. He told me thru-out my years that if i joined the military not to be in infintry so I took his advice and went to armor for 21 yrs. THANK YOU ALEUTIAN VETS!

I was just curious about Attu. My younger brother has just joined the U.S. Coast Guard and just recently got stationed in Attu, from Kodiak. My interest was jump started by wondering where in the world my little brother was going to be. I guess I just needed to know the history and to know that he was going to be okay on his new journey in life. Besides, what are big sisters for, right? My father Lt. Richard W. Burch (from Bonita, CA) flew with the 28th Composite Grp/73rd Bomb Sqd. Adak & Amchitka. Was only there briefly May to Aug. 1943. Might have flown a B-25 called "The Fickle Finger of Fate". Have located Stan Borucki, who was on my father's crew. Would love to find more information about my father's time in the Aleutians. He was KIA 6-20-44, flying B-17 with the 91stBG/324thSqd during a mission over Hamburg, Germany.

Reeves flew me in for 48 hours of fishing with some of my troops at Det 1, Shemya,circa1966.The wx soured and we were there around 5 days. My Sgt Major and I hiked up the river, occasionally stopping to fish for trout that inhabited the upland water. We walked all the way into the landing site bay (Battle of Attu) The landing craft were still there just as they were left in the 1940s. A beautiful and mysterious place full of memories and, surprizingly, life.

I just saw the pbs nova program about missing bomber 31 and wanted to see more about the area. I saw some seens in the program that look like some pictures that I have from my father's war memorialabilia. He was in the Navy.
I enjoyed the history and pictures of the Island. My father was stationed at Kodiak in the late 40's and my brother was born there at Kodiak. Any Navy aircraft operations out of Alaska gets me interested. Thanks for a good site. Dutch
I am looking for any information concerning my uncle John Karner from Wampum PA who was killed in the battle of Attu during WWII. I know very little about him nor do I know what division of the army he served. I only know that he was killed in action. I was hoping someone who served during that time would recognize the name and share some info on how he was killed and the type of person he was.

Very interesting sight. I was checking the sight out because my son, HS2 Ryan Leverenz is in the USCG, stationed at Kodiak. He will be going to Attu in March for 30 days as a replacement for the corpsman there. He is looking forward to the trip as he will be walking on the same ground that his grandfather, Albert Cole Leverenz, walked on while he was stationed in the Army at Attu during WWII. While checking out the sight I found others who had relatives stationed with the USCG at Attu at the present time.

My brother served in ATTU 1942 to 1945, would like to know if anyone knew him, looking at pictures I see many that he had sent home, I have one of him standing in front of the Little Falls Cemetery, I would like to know what unit he was with. here are a couple of his pictures taken then, and ill forward the cemeteray picture. Looking for information on shoot-down of a P-38. Tail Number is unknown. Pilot was Robert Young. Robert iwas an uncle of a friend. He's buried on Attu. Date of loss is unknown. I was stationed at Lorsta Attu in 80/81 as an EM1 in the USCG. Hiked much of the Island, fished & played on the runway when it was snowed in. We had a TV feed from Shemya AFB so we had info from the outside world. Great salmon runs. I enjoyed your web site.
I knew a Coastie who was stationed at the LORAN station around 1980-81. He said that it was a great adventure.
Clarence "dig" Fridley was my great uncle. He was only married for a short time, prior to his death. It was nice to have to have closer in his death. Our family has wondered for a long time, what happened to him. Most of our clan settled in the Eureka area of California. I noticed some questions in the guest book about the family line. You can e-mail me if you have questions.

I first arrived in the aleutians in jan 43. I was on adak and then to amchitka.Returned to the states in aug 43. Returned to the aleutians in July 44.Was on Attu from then until Jan 46.I flew with Base ops Aircraft while on Attu.After I was discharged I returned to Chicago and staid until Dec 46.I then enlisten In the army air corp.I spent the next years in the Usaf And retired as a Sr Master Sgt in aug 73.
I bought the book the Surrender of Attu by R Mitchell, and it is very informing, and knowing my brother was there and during the war, I wish I could fing what unit he was with, am still trying Thanks for a great site.
Father, Harry John Ledford, was in Battle of Attu. He died in 1964, when I was 10 years old. He received a Bronze Star with "V" there, but was discharged in late 1943. Interested to know if anyone knew him.

Great site. I was stationed at CG Lorsta Adak from '66 to '67. Recently I met a veteran of the battle. He told me of his experience, of wading ashore in leather boots, and then getting frostbite. Of having no place to get out of the weather; they couldn't use the caves the Japanese had used because they had used flamethrowers. He was active in getting the WWII veteran's memorial erected in Olympia. A salute to all of you who served in any capacity during those miserable years.

I came across this site during a search for the 206th National Guard unit from Little Rock, Arkansas that was at Dutch Harbor duing WW II. My father (Samuel I. Schmitt) was stationed there with this unit. He is looking for Donald Drake (or info about) who left the Army to become a pilot. We would love to hear from any other vets that were at Dutch Harbor in WW II.
Great website. Dad, Pfc. Lester C. Stone, was a medic attached to A Co., 1st. Btln., 4th Inf. Regt. He was the first help for many wounded on the front lines at Fish Hook Ridge and during the Japaneses Breakthrough that was stopped at Engineer Hill. He would be interested to hear from anyone he helped or who knew him.

WE stopped at Attu during a fishery patrol in the Gulf of Alaska while I was stationed on USCGC Venturous in 1975. We hiked around and had some beers with the Loran station guys. I wouldn't mind going back. My hat goes off to all the Americans who served there during WWII.
Hello Attu-- My uncle Corporal Raymond E. Martin, U.S. Army, was killed in combat against the Japanese on Attu Island on Saturday, the 22nd day of May, 1943. He was 24, having been born in 1919. He's buried in Detroit, Michigan at Mount Olivet Cemetery at 6 Mile Road & Van Dyke. Uncle Ray was assigned with the 17th Infantry, 7th Infantry Division out of Fort Ord, California...

I was on USS SanFrancisco, covering the landing. I saw two planes collide over the harbor, one crashed and sank immediatly, the other with a damaged left aileron, managed to get to the runway, cut the engine as the wheels touched down. As the wings lost lift, the pilot, lept out, landing on his feet running in giant strides at 40 or fifty miles an hour(?) and out distanced the plane as it winged over and crumpled to a stop. Would be great if someone knows more of that story, who the pilot was, etc

My father, Conrad C. Johnson (Lt Col USAFR Ret) took place in the attack on Attu. He flew P-38's about the area and as far west as Russia. He was a 2nd Lt at the time and a member of the AAF's 54th Fighter Squadron. He died June 1 1998.
Would like to hear from anyone who may have known my uncle, Warner McMichen, or anyone wo was in his unit. According to a newspaper article, he was with Company F, 50th Engineers. He was killed on Attu on May 29, 1943. Any information is appreciated. Website is great.

Was in Coast Guard, at the time there was 32 Coast Guard personnel and 5 Air Force personnel. Manned a single slave Lorran "C" and single slave "A". Was sent to Attu ferom a double slave Loran "A" station at Cape Planco Oregon. Which is the furthest point west in the USA.

I was stationed on Attu from Feb 69 to Dec 69, my first unit after boot camp. Had a great summer and managed to get a lot of "Boon-Docking" in... found one cave and tons of 1944 & 45 "Stuff" all over the place. And in winter saw what 110 mile and hour (or at least that is where the "whirly-gig" disintegrated") looks like... remember having to get Tech's out to realign the tower. Lots of exploring... which filled in the time... waiting to leave!

I was stationed on Attu 75-76, USCG (Boatswain Mate). Looking back, we had some interesting times. Lots of memories salmon fishing and hiking. Great web site - thanks for the memories.

My father, Franklin Ross, served aboard the USS ATTU (CVE-102) as Aviation Ordinance Man 3rd lass V6. He passed away on 9 January 2003. One of the gifts I have is the opportunity to thank him for his service and sacrifice during our reunion on the previous Thanksgiving. He never talked much about his service - only generalities. That Thanksgiving, he offered to share the history of his time in the Navy. He died before that became reality. I am grateful for his sacrifice and all those that serve our nation.

smitty, i really like this website. i heard about Attu on a PBS (I think) documentary. I have dreamed since then of putting together an "expedition" to Attu to tour, commemorate, and honor our soldiers who lived there. Perhaps it's a crazy idea, and I'm just getting started on it. I was there from 5/62 to 5/63. Our CO was John Irwin, our XO was Dale Strohecker. Bob Reeves of Reeves Aleutian Airways came Attu see the map of his airline route we made on a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood, copied from a matchbook cover. He autographed his book "Glacier Pilot" for me while he was there. His daughters served as stewardesses. If anyone who served from 1962 to 1963 reads this, I would sure appreciate a return email. Attu is not an experience one would forget.

My father Lt Henry K Voigt, 13 Engineers 7th Infantry, served on Attu Apr-Aug 1943. He passed away Jan 2004. He has copy of diary of Japanese officer Nebu Tatsuqughi, like others on Attu at that time. Anyone know if diary ever reached Tatsuqughi-san's widow or child after the War?

Did a full tour on Attu in the late 70's with the USCG. . Now live in Frankfort Michigan and ran into an ATTU veteran by accident. Found out that there was a reunion of Attu vets in 02 somewhere in Indiana. So I Called up Mr. Don Jones gave him 1200 slides and about 500 pictures of my tours on the rock and told him that any vet that wanted a picture he saw could have it, just give it to him..... That rock changed a lot of men's lives, as it changed mine.... ME

My dad, Stanley Montandon was on Attu in 1943 with the 4th infantry. He would not talk much about it except that he had burried quite a few of his buddies during his time there. Also, there was a tree that the men had built. Trees would not grow on Attu and they were missing home. If anyone knew him, please email me.
The remotness of the Aleutians has fascinated me, and I checked out a web map and discovered the remotest part was Attu. It's a brilliant website, and so good to learn the history of it. Also like the fact that you have to be dragged kicking and screaming into each new year! Great

I know my grandfather, Floyd Sutherland was a WWII vet and fought in the Aleutian Island campaign...I am almost positive he was at Attu...I was told he was never the same after he returned home to Missouri, he had severe frostbite and nearly lost both feet, he suffered with circulation problems the rest of his life. He never wanted to discuss the war and I only learned of his service through local newspaper clippings my grandmother kept. I hope his service to our country will never be forgotten.

Stationed on Attu in 65-66 as an engine man. I still remember it almost every day. Saw Brinkman's name, we were there at about the same time. I've always wondered what happened the cook who fell off the cliff-I think his name was Horstman-may not be spelled correctly.

My 94 year old second cousin told me a story about his friend who was a ham radio operator. His name was Foster Jones. My cousin helped him to learn how to set up the radio that informed them of the invasion. A tragic story that has several versions. When Mrs. Foster Jones came back to NJ she said that the Japanese killed her husband. He has copies of correspondence from the couple. Very interesting story.

My Grandfather was stationed on Attu and was on a bomber squadron of seven planes, I think. His plane did not return from its bombing mission. It was presumed to have gone down in the ocean. About 5 years ago it was found on Kamchatka Penn. in Russia. This past November our family were privileged to go to Wa. DC to see him buried in Arlington Cemetary. His name was Donald Lewallen. I was USCG MK II stationed on Attu from 80-81. Had a good time. Enjoyed the hiking, fishing, old remote battlefields-looked like the soldiers had been there about 10 years earlier instead of 40. Anyone who fought on Attu deserved a medal. Wild weather-saw 160 mph winds on the speed indicator. My most fond Coast Guard memory was the experience of Attu. I think of it often and feel blessed to have been there-through the good and bad.

Clint Davis is my father .. 7th div, 32reg, 2nd bat. He was on the Dataline Attu special. He just turned 87 yesterday and working on 100. The short term memory is giving him trouble but Attu in May of 1943 is stil vivid.
My father, deceased 8/6/93, served in the Scout company of 7th Div, 32 Inf. Reg., 3rd Battalion, I Company. He arrived at Atttu from California via submarine USS Shirkhoff (sp.) and paddled ashore Scarlet beach in a raft deployed from another submarine on May 11, 1943. I remember him describing the incredible 'cold and wet' he experienced. He survived unwounded to serve later at Kwajalein, Leyte and Okinawa where he earned the Bronze Star. Thanks to all who served at Attu in 1943.
Very good information on Attu and Joseph P. Martinez.I'm writing a screenplay for a feature film on Attu. So far the research is the most important work. I'm on page five and the story is developing as something like "Saving Private Ryan",.However there is alot of snow in the scenes, mountain climbing and more. USCG Lorsta Attu 1968-1969 Just one of the 35 "Coasties" and 5 Air Force who have been stationed on Attu over the years. My job as ET3 was Loran A maintenance as well as the UHF FM comm link to Shemya which we used to reach the NORAD line and the cherished phone calls home. My year on the island was hard like the weather and yet is one of the places I'd dearly love to visit again.
