my father, Harold Rex Packwood, USN, served on Attu in 1943-44 as a chief radio operator assigned to PT Base 13. His radio shack was located on Murder Point, overlooking Massacre Bay, believed to be in the area where the twin towers are located on the map. His previous assignment had been aboard AGP-2 HILO, PT Boat Tender, in New Guinea. Thanks for the wonderful site!
My dad CPL Wilbur Travis served with Co E of the 50th Combat Engineers and was the BAR man in his squad. Dad always looked for info on Attu and the men he served with. I have box's of pictures and the Japenese Diary he came home with. Dad passed away in August of 1993. Thank you for bringing your site for all to see. My Father-In-Law was on Attu during WW II. We found his service papers when he passed away and saw he was in the 3062D Ordinance Service Company from March 4,1943 to November 14, 1945.He was a Tech 4 Sgt. and had the "bear" patch on his uniform. He didn't talk much about his time on the island other than his best friend was his German Shepherd guard dog. We have some pictures that he had in an Army scrap book, one is of a group picture of his unit. This is a great web-site, thank you for the opportunity to add comments. Don

As a deck ape on P-512, an AAF air-sea rescue vessel, I spent a year (Oct. '44 to Sept. '45) at Attu with duty at standby stations located at Casco Cove, Alexai Point, and Chichagof Harbor. My unit was the 924th QM Boat Co. which later was designated as the 10th Emergency Rescue Boat Sqdn. Was previously assigned duty at Amchitka in (Constantine Harbor on a 42-footer) and aboard HA-2, a small steel freighter -- "biggest ship in the Army Air Force" -- at Adak. Made two trips up the Inside Passage to Alaska, but spent most of my service time in the Aleutians.

MSG Dennis Eisenbraun Joint Force Headquarters South Dakota Army National Guard I am brother of Jerry Eisenbraun who is currently serving in Afghanistan. Together, he and I have begun research on our Uncle (Alvin Harwood) who fought and died at Attu. We are both extremely grateful for this web site as is is helping to piece together a part of our family history that we don't know a lot about. Our mother used to always tell us about her brother Alvin who was killed in the war in the Aleutian islands but beyond that she didn't have much information. She always told us he was killed by a sniper. We are getting different information from this site. Again thanks for the site.
