Comments: My friend, "Major" Art Fanning flew with 11th Air Force 343 Fighter Group 18th Fighter Squadron in the Aleutians during WWII. Art flew the P-40 Warhawk and later was a test pilot for the whole series. He is a great inspiration to my own piloting. He passed away in 1998 and left me with his photos and a book entitled "One Step to Tokyo" about the Aleutians during WWII. Comments: My father served in Alaska during the war he was with the 410th Engineer Combat Battalion Company C. My father passed away a few years ago and he never talked about his time in the military. I can find no information about the 410th. I have my dads discharge papers stating the battles and campaigns and it states Aleutian Islands GO 33 WD 45. If any one could help with this I would appreciate it. Comments: My father Paul (Technical Sergeant) was a Cryptographic Technician with the 11th Army air force. He was in Alaska for three years from 42 through 19/45. He has the original translation of the diary as he de-coded it from G-2. It's on Onion paper as he typed it. He also has other dairys and letters they decoded. He is now 79 years old and lives with us.

Comments: My Godfather, Joe Arenas, served on Attu during WWII. When I told him I had orders to Alaska, he said at least I wouldn't be on Attu!!! I told him that's where I'm going...and he told me he was sorry for me. I was the LORAN A/C Station C.O. during 1978-1979. Nice website.

Comments: I was stationed on Attu Island for one year-1964 and 1965. At that time we had 33 personnel and 3 dogs. We were a Loran station C, boy those were the days, I was 19 years old and had to spend one year isolated duty there. This was the year the Japanese Government and private Japanese Citizens came back to Attu and gave their dead soldiers a proper burial, never forget eating whale blubber and drinking rice wine with these folks. I cant remember the CO'S name really don't want to, he was a snot nosed LT. I think, anyways I do remember one of the dogs name was Brown Dog old matted loveable dog. Reeves Aleutian flew most of the supplies in, I remember one of the Pilots name was Kelly, he would fly in almost any weather or anywhere, I think he was one of the founders of Reeves Aleutian. Enough of my rambling, just glad there is someone keeping Attu's memories alive Jerry C. Wise

Comments: After retiring due to MS, decided to finally put all my Attu stuff together with my son and write about my father who was KIA on Attu on May 29, 1943, three months before I was born. As a sole surviving son i was exempt from Viet Nam which probably saved me from an early attack of Multiple Sclerosis among other dangers. It took the civilian drs over two decades to decide what it really was. Thank you for providing this site for those of us who lost family on those cold islands. I had seen a few things on the web but nothing as comprehensive as your efforts. Through the years some people made me feel preoccupied with Attu but after reading your site and other histo ry I know why we are drawn to it. All I have to show for a father is a flag and his medals and citations and article s/ Won an award for writing as a teen. He deserves the effort Wish I had Known about reunion. Comments: I have been researching the Aleutian War My uncle fought in the Aleutians with the Royal Canadian Air Force, attached to the 11Th US Air Force. They mainly were involved with Bombing Kisa, and Attu whenever flying conditions permitted. They flew from Adak and Amchitka He was awarded the American Air Medal in September 43.

Comments: I was attached to the Assembly & Repair Dept. NAS, Attu from Jan 1944 to July 13, 1945. Rated Aviation Metalsmith 1/c and did the metalwork necessary to installing electronic gear. Our group of metalsmiths and Mechanics lived in hut #52 just above the taxi way from our repair hanger (at the base of the control tower. Comments: I served on USCG LORSTA Attu from 8/67-8/68. It is one of my most unforgettable experiences. I happen to work for a U.S.-based Japanese company now, and one of my cohorts told me that his father was fortunate enough to leave Attu just prior to the American invasion. What a difference 55 years makes, but I'll bet not much has changed on Attu, or at least I hope not.

Comments: Your Web Site is fantastic, I was on Attu from Feb. 1944 until Dec. 1945. Through this site, I was able to contact a fellow, we were very good friends and it made the stay on that hell hole a lot easier. I contacted him and he got back to me with a vidio that he took on a recent visit to Attu. Tha was th first I heard that they had tours to view the birds, the island itself was for the birds. Comments: I am trying to help my father find his Captain from his days on Attu during WW Two, approx 1943 to 1945, they were in the 397th Base headquarters and Base Squadron. His Captains name was Captain George Metzger, he arrived on Attu as a 1st Lt and was promoted to Captain while there, possibly Mr. Metzger was wounded on New Guinea before arriving on Attu, also possibly was from Des Moines, Iowa. Comments: My father was stationed on Attu from late 1946 to late 1947. My mother, two sisters, and I joined him on Attu as Army dependents from February 1947 to about October 1947. We were transported to the island on the USS Thistle and were returned to the mainland on, I believe, the USS Mower when the Army "deactivated' their role on the island. I have fond memories of my time there (I celebrated my twelfth birthday while on the island and there were so few children that there was no school). One memory was when General Eisenhower was to visit the island but his pilot did a "fly-by" when he decided that Ike was too valuable to risk with a landing on the airfield which paralled a mountain and had a mountain at the end of the runway.

I'm not sure where he was stationed but he was with the 607th Bomb Sqd.Possibly with the 399th Bombardment Group I have about 90 pictures that he tooked while he was there. After telling him what a tremendous amount of information is available on the web, he told me that there wasn't hardly a mention Attu on the web. WOW, did I prove him wrong this morning. I gave him an index of articles about Attu. He was overjoyed to receive that. I am now printing him the Attu list of veterans. I was the search light officer who was responsible for setting search lights up on Shemya. I remained there until the end of the war. We did have one clear day and were able to make it to the titanium monument. We spent our off time hiking the island and found many relics from the past. I remember that on a really nice day, I sat on the southern shore of Shemya, and wondered what that island was all about. Immediately following this series there was another TV series showing Japanese films of the naval war. I am very interested in seeing the Japanese films of their capture of Attu and Kiska. I truly loved the experience, and have always desired to go back, made several abortive inquiries after having returned to live in Alaska with my wife in the 80s. Christmas Eve '75 we had a 130 in, and they took a few of us up and around, and out over the dateline - so we had 2 Christmases ! Lots of memories - the weather, the birds, the loneliness, the remoteness, the history, the comradery, the dogs, the death.

Comments: I was the Aviation Ordnance Officer for Fleet Air Wing 4 from October 1943 to November 1944. Have several photos I am sending in. The PBY's were used fur sector patrols and the PV's,as Robert Larson says,flew the 700 miles,of lousy weather,each way to Paramashiru,Oneketan or Matsua to drop 3 500 lb bombs,usually on airstrips. And always at night! Leaving Attu,after topping off gas tanks abt 11 PM and,hopefully,returning abt 7-8 AM.

Comments: I flew PV-1's from Attu in 1943-1945. I was a PPC (patrol plane commander) with Patrol-bombing squadron VPB-136. We used Attu as a base for bombing the Kurile Islands, and it was a long haul! Ours was the first Ventura squadron to operate from the bomber field. VPB-135, -131, and -139 also operated PV-1's there. How come you don't have a picture or two of the Ventura?

He was civilian employee of the army and killed in an avalanche in his quancit hut along with 3 or 4 other civilian employees of the army. Comments: I was a control tower operator on Attu (Alexai Pt) from June '43 to June'45 (know anyone who was there longer?) The battle was over , only a few straglers remained. The engineers were finishing the steel mat landing strip. Our small group of communications personell were moved from Adak on the Liberty ship Samuel D. Ingram and dumped on the Alexai beach by a landing craft. Many memories come to mind...being bombed by 10 Jap Bettys...the raid on the Kuriles by 10 25's and 10 24's out of Alexai (I think we got back only 10)...sorties making raids on Kiska. Many aircraft accidents. Shemya was a secret base at this time and I can't recall the code name. I do remember Toyko Rose broadcasting that they knew all about it. I also was an Air Traffic Controller at Cold Bay and Yakatat.

Comments: An update. My step-Dad, Woodrow W. Lolley, a veteran of Attu, died 04 Mar 99. He served with the 37th Infantry, Company H, at APO #986, c/o Postmaster, Seattle, WA under Major Howard F. McManus. It looks like they trained at Camp Clatsop, Oregon prior to deployment, and the commander there was Major Phillip R. Dwyer. I have some pictures of Kodiak, where the unit was attached to Ft Greeley. None so far of Attu but now I am certain that the 37th was in Alaska, apparently from fall of 1941. Robert L. There are yet many details I have to figure out. I realize that transportation will be difficult and expensive. Comments: I was in on the invasion of Attu. I was a radioman on the U.S.S. ST. MIHIEL. I remember our ship sitting in the harbor while we could hear the fighting in the hills. I remember one time that the sun actually shone, and some of our men were taking sunbaths on deck while we could hear the cannon on the island. It was kind of a spooky feeling. We took many of the wounded men back to hospitals in Alaska and I think we had more casualties with men having their feet frozen than from acutal wounds. I remember that our medical officer received a medal for his work with the wounded. The St. Mihiel was an old World War I ship that was liberated from the Germans. It had a history with the U.S.Army as an Army transport prior to W.W.II until the beginning of the war when the Navy took it over as a transport. We were also in on the invasion of Kiska. We also took the first Zero plane that the U.S. recovered intact back to the states for evaluation. Comments: I was a member of the 7th, 32reg., 2nd Bat. under Capt. Robert Goodfellow who was wounded and replaced by First Lieutenant Robert J. Mitchell. I was in the landing during May 43 and left in Sept. for Hawaii where the 7th trained for the Marshall Islands invasion. I wish I would have had a camera at the time but it was tough enough just trying to say dry and alive!!!! I do have many stores to relate if your interested.

Comments: My father, Jack D. Faulk, served in the 4th Coast Attry Battn and was in on the landings at Attu in May of '43. He told me that his unit was trained in California for desert warfare and that they thought that they were going to be sent to N. Africa. He never talked much about Attu except to say that he didn't much care for it.

Comments: Have a friend who was in Navy SeaBees and spent some time in Aleutians during WWII. Also an ex shipmate who requested duty there after the invasion of Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines after getting wounded from a kamikaze attack. He thought it the best place to wait out the war. HA!

Comments: I was stationed at the USCG Lorsta Attu from 10/78 to 10/79. It was definitely an incredible experience. With no radio or TV and plane ops only every couple of weeks it was like being in the Twilight Zone. My year there was the first year in 4 that we did not have a fatality on the island. With only a crew of 18, the odds were not very good. Is the Whoopee Hut still there?

Comments: My step-father, Woodrow W. Lolley, fought on Attu in WWII. I was and am still looking for information on the battle, the names of the men who died there and the troops who fought there. Dad was ordered to Alaska via Seattle in '39 and spent 33 months in various sites, training troops, boxing, possibly training Rangers and then the fight at ATTU. We have never been able to elicit many details from him, he has what we now call PTSD(post traumatic stress disorder). An uncle said he helped turn the tide of the battle in hand to hand combat. I would appreciate any leads, information, tombstone names, order of battle, company reports or any data on the battle, on Rangers who trained in Alaska or any information. Thanks, Bob.

Comments: Great site Smitty! Thanks to Rene (Frenchy) who told me about the site and took the time to import/edit the pics. I was stationed on Attu July 94 - June 95. Unlike the WWII folks, I had a enjoyable relaxing year. Lots of hiking, fishing, and exploring the ruins. Anyone remember the mile long tunnel running thru Engineer Hill? We found the entrance but it was flooded and mostly buried under tons of rock. It's one place I would have like to explored. Still lots of artifacts laying around the tundra. Found old utensils, canteens, ,tools, coke bottles, beer bottles, and lots of unexploded ordnance. Many areas of the island are off limits due to the piles of unstable rounds. I'd like to thank all of you who were stationed there in the 40's who preserved our freedom. I was proud to walk in your footsteps.

What you are doing is documenting history that not many are aware of today. We shouldn't keep it a secret - we OWE it to the many defenders who fought and died on these remote islands.If you had a lull of nothing to do after you put the site together . forget it!!!!
