Holtz Bay Cemetery

Floyd Stone of Leitchfield Kentucky provided a copy of the "Memorial Day Exercises" held on the 30th of May, 1946, on the tiny, western-most Aleutian Island of Attu, Alaska, commemorating those killed in action during the battle for Attu and who were buried in either Attu's Little Falls or Holtz Bay cemeteries. The Invocation was given by Chaplain Meaney; the Memorial Day Address by Captain Adair, and the Decoration of Graves was by Chaplain Insko and Chaplain Meaney. The service was followed by a Firing Squad Salute and the playing of Taps. The names of those honored during this ceremony were made available In the November-December issue of Al King's "Periodic Williwaw Letter." We thank Al for making this list available. (e-mail Al)

Additional Confirmed KIA not on the "Memorial Day Exercise" List.

•  Lt. Col. James Richard Watt went MIA when shot down by Japanese 'Betty' bombers which had been attacking Attu before he and his flight intercepted them. This is according to General Orders Number 82 of Maj. Gen. Butler dated July 1, 1943.I was there and confirm this report.

• My uncle Edmundo N. Barrios is listed incorrectly as Edmundo, Barrios. I would appreciate it being corrected. Thank You, Edmund Olague. (8Feb2007)
   
• I would like to correct the spelling of Henry Klemp, to Henry A. Klimp. He was killed in action at Attu, World War ll. He is buried in Minnesota now. Thank you; his niece, Carolyn Klimp Binnebose (6Jan2007)
   
• Just wanted to let you know Lt. Robert (Bob) little is buried in columbus ohio in greenlawn cemetery. His wife never remarried and is still living in columbus ohio. She is 82 years young (as of 29Nov2006).

• Arthur LaFleur's home town is also misspelled and should read Escanaba, Michigan. He was re-interred to Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells, Michigan in Delta County with the rest of his family.

• I have bookmarked the Attu page for a while but visit rarely. It was reassuring to see the commemoration of the soldiers killed in action there. That a small but bloody part of the war will not be forgotten, and the valor shown by these men is remembered. In the KIA listing: Cnong, Donald, the correct spelling is Chong, Donald. He was the valet for his colonel and died at his side. Donald's name is on the Chinese-American soldiers killed plaque in Portsmouth Square San Francisco. He was re-interred in San Luis Obispo memorial cemetery after the war. An article was written during the war about the battle and his unit in, I believe, Stars and Stripes. I look forward to following this link.

• we have been reviewing our relatives for a Family Tree and have touched on your site. I would like to submit a name correction. Under the KIAs, "Patrick McKliger" should read "Patrick McKliget". He was my uncle and I do appreciate the correction. Sincerely, Patrick & Debra McKliget

• I would like to correct the spelling of my cousin Duane's last name. He is listed as Duane Muchison, Buchanan Dam, Texas. The correct spelling is Murchison. I grew up hearing that he was killed in action in WWII, but my father could not remember where Duane was in action.   Pedro Wooley, should be Sedro Wooley Vancover needs a u: Vancouver
  Tappenish, Wask should be Toppenish, Wash
  Memaphis should be Memphis
  Alemeda, Calif. should be Alameda

• The name of the town for Milton Rugland should be ROSEAU, Minnesota instead of Roso.  Thank you.  I was born after the war, but I remember my dad talked about Milton and Attu.  My dad was Earl Rugland, and he served in Europe during WWII. Connie Johnson
