Comments: I was stationed at Murphy Dome from Feb 73 to Feb 74. I worked in the Power
plant and also worked in the fire station. The fire station went out to watch helicopters as
they landed in case they had a problem. What a beautiful place. I remember how cold it was.
Boilers going full just trying to keep up. Diesel Gens going on and off. Worked 7 days a week.
Some of the hunters would bring the bears up to the site and gut them there. At night the
northern light were really a site to see. Hope to see it again some day. Air Force trained me
in Power Plant work

sorry to see the site automated, looks very overgrown with weeds. Hope to make it back up
there some day and visit. Have very fond memories and made a lot of good friends up at the
site. Guys here at the lower forty eight always ask me about living at a remote site I always
tell them it was not bad, one of the benefits was the old saying:
THERES A GIRL BEHIND EVERY TREE UP THERE.
Well i just want to say enjoyed coming upon the web site and look foward to stoping in.

sights like that since then. Nearly died on a couple of experiences up there, but that is a
part of growing up and what Alaska is all about. Can't take much for granted up there, as you
can in the lower 48.

Thanks for having the page and history. Hope to send others there, as well. Got small slides
of the Dome if there is an interest, and if I can figure how to turn them into digitals.

Location: Altamonte Springs, Florida
Comments: Stationed at Shemya from August 65 to August 66.POL Section. During mail call
at Amarillo AFB (tech school for POL) our OIC finally delivered my orders for PCS. He asked me
had I ever heard of Shemya Alabama. Being born in Alabama and visiting over the years I could
only come up with Selma, Alabama. Then the hardest words that an 18 year old could hear was
"this isn't Alabama, there's an "R" behind the base. You're going REMOTE!!" Arriving in
Elmendorf in August 65, we spent the first week moving furniture from the first floor to the
third floor of some deserted barracks and then from the third down to the second and first.
(Military management of idle troops). Upon departing EAFB we flew out on the Alaskan Airline
"superconnie", and there was a fire (electrical) in the belly of the old bird. The pilot came on
the speaker and said don't worry we're extinguishing it and proceeded on to Shemya. I knew then
that the venture I was embarking on was going to be a lulu. When we arrived at "The Rock" I
was assigned to the POL section there on the tarmac by the tower. My barracks was one of the
quantsun huts (Perks' Palace") until they moved us into the 600 building around November
65.The thing that sticks out in my memory of "The Rock" more than anything was that the Reeves
Aleutian Airways plane couldn't get in due to weather around Christmas and a lot of GI's
didn't get any presents until after the holiday. Chow hall prepared every wing a cake. When we
woke up Christmas morning the snow had fallen and covered the island with about a foot of snow
and the sun was shining bright. First time I'd ever seen so much snow. A Christmas gift from
God.I had hoped when the glorious day came to go back stateside Alaskan Airlines would have
got a jet to replace the ole superconnie. I had refueled it for a year each time it came and
went and knew it was a sift. The day I left and they fired up the inside port engine; it caught
on fire! Knew I wasn't going to get off The Rock! The pilot advised for us not to worry....he
throttled up the engine and blew out the fire. Then the old tired bird took us to
Elmendorf. Grew up a lot at Shemya. Have been haunted by it all my life and it seems to
mysteriously call to come back. May do that some day if I ever win the lottery. Would love to
hear from any of my old buddies stationed there with me if you ever drop in on Smitty's superb
web site.

still running anywhere in the world.
What i remember most was the cold...though it wasn't that bad once you got used to
it...beautiful country though.

memories of my tour there in 1956-57. I took my wife back to the site for a visit 3 years ago,

We're taking our entire family of children, inlaws and grandchildren to Alaska next month and
the younger generation members are anticipating seeing the site where "dad" and "grandpa"
served in the USAF>

Their brother, John W. O'Brien was reported missing in action in on November 18, 1943. John
was a tail gunner on a B-24 with the 404th Bomb Squadron. Details of the loss of the plane
have never been reported to the family-To our knowledge, John's remains were never found. We
have two photographs of John standing by the B-24 with the crew. The last word from John was
that he was enganged in action on or near Kiska.

Comments: I worked what was called a "rotation" job out of Anchorage, Alaska, 1992 -
1996. We would report to work at Anchorage International Airport on a Wednesday morning, fly
out to a remote site in Southwest Alaska, work 10 hours per day until the following Wednesday,
then fly back to Anchorage for 6 days off "in the big town" and then report to the airport on
the next Wednesday morning to do it all over again. Two crews, with one going out while the
other was coming in, gave continuous coverage. I went mainly to Cold Bay, Dutch Harbor, and
Sand Point, with occasional trips to King Salmon, the Pribilofs, Chignik, Port Heiden, and a
few others - including one trip to Adak to refuel. I like to walk in my off duty time, and
spent some great times hiking around remote areas. The WWII history is fantastic. Keep up the
good work with this site.

Comments: Hi George,

Looks like I am going to be the first Dude to sign your guestbook - again! Having a "Misc
Site" is a great idea. It's a place to put all of the "I'm not sure where this goes" stuff.
From this "Misc" site other specific site could come from it. What a great photo! I never
heard of Murphy Dome. Keep up the good work and congratulations on putting together another
great site... Rene
