My father John F. Rock I believed served with the Army Corps Of Engineering at Ft. Glenn but I am not sure. I know he was in Umnak Island back around 1944 according to a picture dated in his own hand writing. I could see on an old truck the number 53 but not sure what that meant. Have have enjoyed my new journey as to finding out more about his life and work there. He passed away in 1962 and now almost 50 years later I am trying to get information

I am currently writing a book about my father, Wayne "Ret" Nelson who served on Umnak Island in 1942-43. I would be interested in knowing if there is anyone who knew him or who served on Umnak during this time.

I went ashore to the village by skiff from the F/V Sunset captained by Ken Asse. An elder came out to get us. We went to Scott and Agrafina's home so Capt Asse could make a phone call. I walked around amongst the horses. Misty, the dog led me to the church graveyard. Having been a freind of the Holmes I have also spent time working at Chernofski. I long to return to the islands of the Unagan. The world needs places like Nikolski. I am lucky to have once been her guest.

Working on a scrapbook of my father ("Jake" Slaughter)- Army, Aleutian Islands (photos mostly say Umnak Island)1942-44.Tried to record him talking about this, but tape didn't work. Think his group built an airstrip. He was walking guard duty along the shore @ night, stumbled over a dead seal- scared him to bits. Also some guy missed the rope guide to a tent & spent the night in snowdrift 10' from tent- found him alive next morning by his breathing hole. Anyone know my Dad? Or about the airstrip?

My Dad Arthur Dunston was on Umnak for 2 years. He recently heard about the volcano erupting and has started to talk about his experiences. He has told me about sleeping in tents for several months when they first arrived and then in Quonset huts. He does not have email but if any of you would like to communicate with him I will send it along. He is now in Florida but grew up in Hannibal Missouri.

I heard about the volcano today and immediately looked up Umnak with Google Maps. It looks like a beautiful place. I hope everyone (and the cows too) is okay. Has global warming had any impact in the Aleutians? Is the weather getting noticeably more moderate? What's life like up there?

In 1998, I began my project of collecting stories from World War 2 veterans and their families for the purposes of preserving and documenting information for future generations to learn. One day, all this information will be donated to the General Patton Memorial Museum.
