Good web site. I served with VP-1 in 1960-1961 as their air intelligence officer. Made two deployments to Adak. Probably the most exciting flying I have ever seen. From the distance of 45 years my memories of Adak are all good! Tried to make a return visit with my wife last year but weather prevented our departure from Kodiak.

I have been fortunate to have had two tours of duty on Adak, 16 years apart. This allowed me to observe a small bit of growth in the Adak National Forest. Tour 1, 1954 being assigned to the Navy Exchange, NavSta. There was a small water fall in the stream from Lake Mary to Finger Bay. We watched salmon on their trip upstream to spawn. Great bunch of guys. Tour 2, most of 1970 and a bit of '71 with duty at ComSta (SecGru). ComSta was known as 'Radio City', in '54. The NatFor had grown about a foot or so in the intervening 16+ years. I was a young Storekeeper during the first tour, and recreation was mostly fishing and beer drinking. Second tour added rat shooting in the dump, but it was an experience. I have a photo of a large sign on the NEX gas station. "Cheapest Gas West of Kodiak". Of course at the time, it was the only gas west of Kodiak! Powdered milk, cold storage eggs, government cheese and fresh shrimp and salmon. If I had deep pockets, I would buy the place and invite all Williwaw Warriors back to visit. Does anyone know, is the underground hospital (Army built and left from WW II) still open to exploring? Lake Andy fishing for kokanee and Dollyvarden trout was great. Anyone know what happened to SKC O'Brian from NEX '54?

I Was on Adak from Octobert 1943, until December 19435, serving in the Advanced Command Post Signal Section of the Alaskan Defense Command, originally under Gen Bucker and then under Gen Butler. I and my unit were sent up as replacements for those that were expected to be killed in the battle for Kiska Island, one which never materialized because the Japanese, all 5,183 of them, had had the good sense to abandon the island, despite being "bottled up" by the US Navy. Not knowing what else to do with us, the Army shipped us back to Adak, where we shivered and shook in unheated tents, which the williwaws frequently blew down. Eventually we moved into Quonset huts, and then our Signal Corps group was promoted into barracks. Our lives revolved around the cryptograhpic work in the message center, and time off sleeping in the barracks, which were always dark, because one shift had just gone to bed, one was just getting up, and one was away working. I can recall only two individuals from that time, one the well known author of hard detective novels, Dashiel Hammett, and the other one a man by the name of Zucker, from LA as I recall. After the Japanese surrendered, Hammett was chose to go back to Anchorage to get the trainng to come back and orient us poor GI's to civilian life, but he never quite made it. He did come back to Adak, but it was with two dufflebags full of illict booze, and the highlight of his orientation lecture was a repeated "Can you hear me back there?" which he managed to get out several times before collapsing onto a convenient chair. We did enjoy his generous sharing of his brandy later on in our barracks though. I have a few pictures from that time, some showing the quonsets, the Destroyer Escort which was blown aground by a williwaw, and a view of snow covered Mount Moffett. I would be glad to hear from any members of the Detachment, if they are still around. I seem to recall that it was the 1442nds Signal Corps Detachment, but I'm not sure of that. Stand up against the williwaws, and don't let the earthquakes or the volcano ash get you down.

I was on Adak in the Signal Center for the advanced Command Post of the Alaska Defense Command. Along with others, I went up as replacements for the Battle of Kiska which never materialized, and served there on Adak for the the next 26 months, finally getting away in December 1945. I would be glad to hear from any who served in that unit during that period. I have a few pictures, but most of the names have faded away. I remember Dashiel Hammett and his duffle bag of illicit booze delivered during his orientation lectures. Also recall a GI named Zucker, but that's about it. Glad to find your web page.

My first duty station in the Navy was Adak, From September 1970 to September 1971. After several months of being miserable, I finally figured out how to have a great time. Had an old 1958 Ford(13th owner) and we stayed in the old Quonset huts throughout the island. I stopped complaining afterstopping at Shemya courtesy of Reeve Aleutian Airways on my way back to Adak. Some great memories made there.

U.S. Navy (CT) 1066-67. Went from Adak from Tech School in Pensacola. Also spent several months on Shemya and then PCS to Taiwan for 2 years after that. 25 years in law enforcement and then retirement. I now run my own private investigation business. Many long months in isolation don't look nearly as bad when looking back.

I AM EXCITED, THOUGHT I'D SIGN IN BEFORE I SEEK THE END OF A LONG JOURNEY...I HOPE IT IS TRULY HERE! MY STORY-IN SHORT...MY GRANDFATHER "PER VICTOR PETERSON" (PER VIKTOR PERSSON:BEFORE ELLIS ISL.) A SWEDISH FINISH CARPENTER; NOT ENLISTED, BUT A CIVILIAN ASSISTED THE AMERICAN MILITARY ON SHEMYA, ADAK AND ATTU (PLUS OTHERS) DURING THE EARLY TO MID 1940's. I AM IN SEARCH OF ONE OF HIS HAND CRAFTED WORKS OF ART...(PROBABLY WITHERED AWAY TO NIL) THE TOTEM REPRESENTING THE AMERICAN MILITARY OCCUPATION DURING WWII. HE MADE THE TOTEM AND - I BELIEVE - IT IS ON THE MILITARY BASE THERE (ADAK ?). ATOP THE TOTEM OF LOCAL CREATURES SITS A "NOSE CONE AND PROPELLER" REPRESENTING OUR AMERICAN MILITARY AT THAT TIME. INSIDE THE BASE OF THE TOTEM (IN A HOLLOW, AND LIKELY NOT WELL PROTECTED) MY GRANDFATHER PLACED A SWEDISH NEWSPAPER HE RECEIVED AROUND THE TIME; MONTH AND YEAR HE FINISHED THE TOTEM. HE HAS PASSED AND I HAVE HIS COLLECTION OF TREASURED FINDS TO INCLUDE ALL THE WONDERFUL STORIES OF HIS LIFE'S ADVENTURES OF 89 YRS. YOUNG! PICTURES TOO! HAVE A PICTURE OF THE ONE & ONLY TREE GROWING ON ADAK (ATTU ?)...JUST A COUPLE FEET TALL AND WELL TWISTED BY NATURES EXTREMES!......ANYWAY, LOTS TO SHARE IF IT SEEMS OF ANY INTEREST-MAY JUST BE NEW AND WONDROUS FOR ME; THINK I'LL KEEP MY "MORPHAR" UP THERE!!! ANYONE HAVE A PIC OF HIS TOTEM? OF ALL HIS MEMOIRS, HAVE BUT A MINIATURE REPLICA, AND THE NOTE (COPY OF WHAT HE COULD RECALL-DESCRIPTION) HE PUT INSIDE W/NEWSPAPER. WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF SITES, SEE YA-ALL, VERY FONDLY- KAI.
