Paul Simon

From folk-rock troubadour to world-beat visionary, the many phases of Paul Simon's career all share his unmistakable touch as a songwriter and musical storyteller.

On August 15, 1991, Simon performed a historic free concert in New York's Central Park. Part of his "Born at the Right Time" tour, the show attracted a record audience of 750,000. Simon took to the stage with eighteen Brazilian, African, and American musicians, along with his black, custom acoustic guitar, one of many that Yamaha has made for him since 1974. The warm summer evening witnessed a musical journey through Simon's many hits, from "The Sound of Silence" to "The Boy in the Bubble." The event also formed the basis for Paul Simon's Concert in the Park album and video.

John Lennon

On December 15, 1970, Lennon purchased a Steinway Model Z upright piano and had it delivered to his home outside of London. The piano became integral to the creation of Lennon's solo music and is best remembered today as the instrument on which he composed his visionary plea for world peace, "imagine." Based on a poem by Yoko Ono, the song gained added poignancy following Lennon's untimely passing in 1980, and remains one of the artist's most beloved tracks. Since 2006, the piano has toured the world in the name of peace.

Leonard Bernstein

A composer, conductor, pianist, and educator, Leonard Bernstein was an American musician of international fame.

He studied music at Harvard University where he met fellow composer and lifelong friend Aaron Copland. Bernstein also attended Philadelphia's acclaimed Curtis Institute of Music.

In 1958 he became the first U.S.-born music director of the New York Philharmonic. He popularized the Young People's Concert series and conducted the orchestra in many recordings, including landmark performances of symphonies by Austrian composer Gustave Mahler.

Along with composers such as John Phillip Sousa, George Gershwin, and Copland, Bernstein helped define a uniquely American musical style. His score for West Side Story (1957), an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, reflects the cultural diversity of the 1950s in New York.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

Beginning as a jug band in mid-1960s California, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fueled the country-rock music movement and later joined forces with bluegrass and country icons of the American South.

Band members Jeff Hanna, John McEuen, Jimmie Fadden, Jimmy Ibbotson, and Les Thompson achieved national commercial success with their 1970 album "Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy," which included "Mr. Bojangles," now a Grammy Hall of Fame single.

Recorded in 1971 and produced by William E. McEuen, the momentous "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" was the result of an unparalleled partnership in Nashville, Tennessee, between the Dirt Band and such artists as Roy Acuff, Maybelle Carter, Vassar Clements, Jimmy Martin, Earl Scruggs, Merle Travis, and Doc Watson. Treasured by rock and country music audiences and critics alike, this triple album was released in 1972 on United Artists Records and went multiplatinum.

Elvis Aaron Presley

Born on the 8th of January, 1935, Presley absorbed the sounds of gospel, pop, and country music while growing up in Tupelo, Mississippi. When the family moved to Memphis in 1948, he became fascinated with the African-American R&B sounds he heard along Beale Street.

His distinctive style caught the ear of Sam Phillips, chief of Sun Records. Subsequently, that lable released Elvis's 1954 debut single: a version of Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right Mama," along with a rockabilly interpretation of Bill Monroe's bluegrass classic ""Blue Moon of Kentucky." A star was born.

By 1956, Elvis had moved on to RCA Records with a string of massive hits including "Heartbreak Hotel," "Hound Dog," and "Jailhouse Rock." Presley became the idol of a dynamic new youth music phenomenon called rock 'n' roll.

Duane Eddy

Guitarist Duane Eddy created a lasting influence on rock and roll music.

Eddy began playing in Phoenix bands in the mid-1950s. By experimenting with melodies in the low register of the guitar and by adding tremolo, vibrato, and echo effects, he developed a "twangy" tone that would launch him to stardom.

With cowriter and producer Lee Hazlewood, Eddy scored an international smash hit with the 1958 instrumental "Rebel 'Rouser." A long list of chart-topping successes followed, popularizing the electric guitar as a solo instrument in rock and roll, and influencing notable musicians such as George Harrison, John Fogerty, and Bruce Springsteen. A Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Eddy has sold more than one hundred million records around the world. He continues to record and tour.

MIM's Version of Eggs Benedict

Lunch time at the MIM...offerings range from basic items to exotic concoctions such as their version of Eggs Benedict. Consisted of egg whites, lots of spinach, an exotic sounding locally available meat...and the requisite sauce. I ended up fishing out all the spinach, which reduced the height of the pile by about 1.5", and made it taste a little more palatable. It did not taste like eggs benedict to me...and it cost big bucks!

Bunraku ("literary music") of Japan

Graceful larger-than-life puppets act out dramatic and tragic tales, as a single narrative singer performs all the characters to the accompaniment of a shamisen lute. The music of the shamisen is exaggerated; its simple pattern powerfully underlines the action.

Operated by three puppeteers, Bunraku puppets are able to express the full range of human emotions and movements.

Developed in the 17th century for the entertainment of Osaka's merchant classes, the stories of Bunraku are about ordinary people and everyday experiences. Performers typically select a few acts for performances, as entire plays are so long that they could run for days.

Noh Theater

Noh Artists Perform the Noh Aoi Ue (The Lady Aoi)

Music of the Noh theater creates a mystic atmosphere, transporting audiences into the world of the characters.

The music has a mysterious quality, with three drums and a single flute providing the backdrop for highly symbolic poetic texts. Captivated by the poetry's rich imagery, the audience envisions the settings for each scene. Actors move slowly across the bare stage, performing centuries-old plays written by father-son playwrights Kan'ami and Zeami. The actor's ornate costumes are works of art with lead characters cloaked in expressive masks.

Often, the Noh plays are Buddhist morality tales that teach the futility of clinging to material values as well as the need to follow one's path of duty and responsibility. Over centuries, Noh grad developed into the graceful and refined masked theater that it is today.

Japanese "Gagaku"

Gagaku (literally, "elegant music") is one of the oldest unbroken teacher-to-pupil musical traditions in the world, kept alive since the 7th century.

Gagaku is one of Japan's only styles that uses a full orchestra--a range of string, wind, and percussion instruments. Other musical traditions are intended to accompany singing or to create dramatic effects for theatrical performances, but gagaku is music made for listenting.

During Japan's Heian period (794-1185), gagaku was widespread as the popular music of daily life. With the rise of the military ghogunate, gagaku was practiced only in temples and shrines. Hidden away within the Imperial Court, local audiences had a few opportunities to hear gagaku. However, foreign composers such as Igor Stravinsky and Pierre Boulez brought international attention to this style.

The Big Drum

The Big Drum originated in the Plains but is now at the heart of intertribal social gatherings called powwows throughout North America.

The Northern style of big-drum music tends to have a faster tempo and high nasal-pitched singing, while the Southern style is slower and is accompanied by a lower vocal range. There are also regional distinctions in the instrument: Northern beaters are usually fur-covered, while Southern ones are frequently made from buckskin or sheepskin.

Crafted from a wide array of materials, often including buffalo skin, the Big Drum is played in unison by a number of drummers as they sing. Big-drum music accompanies various styles of dances at powwows.

Hawaii

In Hawaiian music and dance performances, poetry, rhythm, melody, and movement serve multiple functions ranging from entertainment to prayer.

In the popular dance form hula, song lyrics are especially important, communicating descriptive and historical information, and reminding local people of their shared identities. Today, music and dance knowledge is passed along in selected hula schools on the islands and in Hawaiian communities on the mainland.

Hula songs are accompanied by highly valued traditional instruments such as the decorated pahu drum, double-gourd ipu heke, and small Puniu knee drum. In addition, dancers play gourd and bamboo rattle instruments and ka'eke'eke rhythm sticks to provide both rhythm and sound for this sung poetry. Guitars and ukuleles, introduced during the 19th centry, often accompany hula and other Hawaiian performances.

Bands...

Modern-day marching and community bands have their roots in 19th-century American military bands.

The instruments used in these early bands had to meet one major criterion: portability. The demand was for instruments that could easily be carried from camps to battlefields.

Beyond that, the instruments evolved to suit the unique situation of a band marching at the front of a column of troops. Over-the-shoulder horns were specifically designed to project the instrument's sound behind the player, the better to be heard by the soldiers marching at the back of the band.

The Concert Band

A new type of band---the concert band---developed in the United States in the mid-to-late 19th century.

These popular community bands were derived from military bands, but were larger and included a wider variety of instruments than the traditional brass used in military contexts. One of the most popular Amearican bands of the early 20th century was the one led by John Philip Sousa. Although best known for playing marches, ironically, they never played while marching. Sousa's band also performed opera excerpts, orchestral pieces, popular songs, and light classics. In a time of limited access to recordings and symphony orchestras, the Sousa band became a live concert sensation, touring both the United States and the world many times.

19th Century Music In The Home...

In the 19th century, families made their own music in the home.

Middle-and upper-class amateur musicians had the means to purchase instruments and the spare time to learn music. While women typically played the harp, guitar, or keyboard, men played the flute, clarinet, or violin. Learning to play an instrument was a valued part of a child's upbringing that indicated the family's sophistication. Individuals played solo music, or family members could play together in informal ensembles.

Families played the "classical" music of European masters such as Handel or Haydn, as well as popular arrangements of contemporary songs. One might hear songs by Schubert, religious hymns, sentimental ballads, or songs intened to teach moral lessons. American composers began to compose songs expressly for home-music making.

The Grand Harmonicon

Francis Hopkinson Smith (1797-1872) patented his version of musical glasses on April 7, 1825, and called it "Grand Harmonicon.

The glasses were blown to pitch and played by rubbing their rims with moistened fingers. The instrument was intended primarily for use by amateur musicians at home rather than in a concert hall.

Once a popular parlor instrument, musical glasses saw a decline around 1860 with rumors that playing the instrument, and the ethereal sounds it produced, caused madness. Many players suffered nervous breakdowns. At the time, it was thought that the vibrations resulted in nervous system decline, but it may be that touching the glasses and their painted rims, both of which contained lead, contributed to lead poisoning over time.

Appalachian Mountain Music

When English and Scots-Irish immigrants settled in the rural Appalachian Mountains, they brought their music with them---ballads, hymns, and other song forms.

These musical traditions were passed from generation to generation via instruments---often homemade---such as the dulcimer, banjo, guitar, double bass, and fiddle, many drawn from a common European heritage. But the music was transformed in its new environment, generating styles such as shape-note hymn singing.

By the 1920's, radio, recordings, and sheet music helped popularize Appalachian music across America. The Carter Family layered rich vocal harmonies atop guitar and autoharp accompaniment, earning them the title, "First Family of Country Music." Appalachian string bands gave rise to other iconic American styles including bluegrass, country and western, and the folk music revival of the 1960's.
