This panoramic view of what was Attu’s WWII Marine Area is looking south towards Massacre Bay in the direction of Casco or Temnac Bay. The 1995 color image rendition of the Marine Area consisted originally of three separate images supplied to us by Rene Thibault, who in turn received them from Jim Flynn. The tree images were stitched together to form a single image. The 1946 B&W photo of that same area was supplied to us as a single image by Rene Thibault, stationed on Attu in 1946 as a U. S. Marine who worked at the Navy Brig. By clicking on each image you can cause it to open in a new browser window where you can enlarge them for a detailed close-in view. You can also compare the two top images (1995-1946) to each other by right-clicking on each of the two photos and selecting “Open Link In New Window,” resulting in each of them being opened in separate browser windows. This will allow you to then size and align the two browser windows side-by-side. By left-clicking on each of the photos you can further enlarge the images if you wish. You can then scroll each of the two images to align them at a common reference point…the gymnasium is a good choice (see bottom two reference photos for location). Once you have each photo visually in sync with the other, you can then compare the original environment as seen in the 1946 photo to that as seen in the 1995 photo.
