ATTU’S KIA

www.hlswilliwaw.com

There were two cemeteries located on Attu by the end of WWII. The KIA listing below shows those buried at each

location. Little Falls Cemetery was located near the foot of Gilbert Ridge, to the north and west of the old Navy

Base (Navy Town), while the Holtz Bay Cemetery was located near Holtz Bay, having the Northern Landing Forces

KIA buried there. In 1946, the American's remains were removed and buried either at Ft. Richardson near

Anchorage, AK; Sitka, AK; or in other locations as designated by their relatives. Since then, the ground on Attu

known as "Little Falls Cemetery" has been recaptured by the tundra...with no visible signs of it today. There's no

additional information regarding the cemetery at Holtz Bay. Many veterans to date were not aware the Holtz Bay

cemetery even existed.

Floyd Stone of Leitchfield Kentucky provided a copy of the "Memorial Day Exercises" held on the 30th of May, 1946,

on the tiny, western-most Aleutian Island of Attu, Alaska, commemorating those killed in action during the battle

for Attu and who were buried in either Attu's Little Falls or Holtz Bay cemeteries. The Invocation was given by

Chaplain Meaney; the Memorial Day Address by Captain Adair, and the Decoration of Graves was by Chaplain Insko

and Chaplain Meaney. The service was followed by a Firing Squad Salute and the playing of Taps. The names of

those honored during this ceremony were made available In the November-December issue of Al King's "Periodic

Williwaw Letter." We thank Al for making this list available. (e-mail Al)

Rene Thibault [deceased] was a huge contributor to our web site, having served on Attu during WW-II. I thanked

Rene profusely for mailing me a copy of Al's Newsletter, which in part made this all happen!

Russ Marvin, an Aleutians traveler, provided information relating to the location of Little Falls Cemetery. Our

thanks to Russ.

I would also like to thank George Blood, a fellow Shemya-ite, for donating his time and skills to convert Al's printed

newsletter text into a format suitable for display on our web site. Some of the printed material was not legible,

which means more than likely there may be some mistakes made in the spelling of some names. If you know for

sure a name or location is spelled incorrectly, and you do have the correct spelling available, please contact

HLSWILLIWAW.COM and we will repair the error(s). Also, if you know of a person who should be included on this list

but isn't, let us know and we'll add it.

A listing of of Attu’s native residents who died and survived their ordeal of WWII has been added to the site. Please

visit HERE.

Additional Confirmed KIA not on the "Memorial Day Exercise" List: • Lt. Col. James Richard Watt went MIA when shot down by Japanese 'Betty' bombers which had been attacking Attu before he and his flight intercepted them. This is according to General Orders Number 82 of Maj. Gen. Butler dated July 1, 1943.I was there and confirm this report. Harry C. Higgins, WWII P-38 Pilot •McLeod, Clair R. Hero of Attu Beachhead (Click HERE)

KIA Corrections

• Changed Keiser, Victor - Shebeygan, Wis. to Kaiser, Victor, Sheboygan, WI. Our thanks to Lorie Kelling, Conover, WI. 3/31/2015. • Gary Vanderlean-Kaywood, Calif has been corrected to read "VanDerLann, Gary-Maywood, Calif." Our thanks to Paula Carr, Gary's niece. • The previous listing of "Hood, Houer" has been changed to reflect "Hood, Homer" of Amarillo, TX. A picture and story of Homer can be found at http://scouts87_90.tripod.com/id35.html Our thanks to Stan Love for this contribution, correction, and update. 15 Jan 2013. • It shows as Ashby, Ban. However, his name is Ashby, Ben O. - Wayne Ashby, Nephew, 7/24/2011 •Vernon Wagner was my uncle - the correct spelling of his last name is "Wegner." - Tracey Besser, 7/5/2010 •*Evensen, Emil: According to William Tarver, Emil's last name is correctly spelled as "Evenson." A bridge in California was named after Emil, a native of the Ft. Bragg area who was killed on Attu during WWII. The bridge is known as Bridge 10-175 and crosses over Hare Creek in Mendocino County, CA, and was so named in 1948. (8 Mar 2010) [UPDATE: 2/27/2015 Emil Evensen’s name actually should be EVENSEN, not EVENSON. I am not sure who Mr. Tarver is, but I was married to Emil Paul Evensen—nephew of Emil H Evensen.] •Smith, Mernin - Susanville, Calif.; should be Smith, Mervin. Diane Armstrong. (3 June 2009) •Correction to John F. Riess entry. He was eventually buried at Resurrection Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. Nancy Lewis, Niece (23 May 2009). •My uncle, Stephen, was killed in Attu before I was born. Just wanted to let you know the correct spelling of his name is, Stephen C. Saltzmann. He is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, New Jersey. A. Richardson (22Jul2008) •Just a small correction for the home of Kelly Robbins. He was from Snow, OK, not Mt. Snow. Kelly was my uncle on my mother's side. Troy Pool. (17Oct2007) •My uncle Edmundo N. Barrios is listed incorrectly as Edmundo, Barrios. I would appreciate it being corrected. Thank You, Edmund Olague. (8Feb2007) •I would like to correct the spelling of Henry Klemp, to Henry A. Klimp. He was killed in action at Attu, World War ll. He is buried in Minnesota now. Thank you; his niece, Carolyn Klimp Binnebose (6Jan2007) •Just wanted to let you know Lt. Robert (Bob) little is buried in columbus ohio in greenlawn cemetery. His wife never remarried and is still living in columbus ohio. She is 82 years young (as of 29Nov2006). Thanks. Mike Bell, nephew of Sue and Bob Little. •Arthur LaFleur's home town is also misspelled and should read Escanaba, Michigan. He was re- interred to Gardens of Rest Cemetery in Wells, Michigan in Delta County with the rest of his family. Nancy LaFleur Seay, 5APR2006 •I have bookmarked the Attu page for a while but visit rarely. It was reassuring to see the commemoration of the soldiers killed in action there. That a small but bloody part of the war will not be forgotten, and the valor shown by these men is remembered. In the KIA listing: Cnong, Donald, the correct spelling is Chong, Donald. He was the valet for his colonel and died at his side. Donald's name is on the Chinese-American soldiers killed plaque in Portsmouth Square San Francisco. He was re-interred in San Luis Obispo memorial cemetery after the war. An article was written during the war about the battle and his unit in, I believe, Stars and Stripes. I look forward to following this link. Robert Davis •we have been reviewing our relatives for a Family Tree and have touched on your site. I would like to submit a name correction. Under the KIAs, "Patrick McKliger" should read "Patrick McKliget". He was my uncle and I do appreciate the correction. Sincerely, Patrick & Debra McKliget •I would like to correct the spelling of my cousin Duane's last name. He is listed as Duane Muchison, Buchanan Dam, Texas. The correct spelling is Murchison. I grew up hearing that he was killed in action in WWII, but my father could not remember where Duane was in action. Most of the older generation have passed on, and there are few left who know his story. Diane M. kmurchison1@satx.rr.com •Thank you so much for honoring my cousin who died in combat on Attu. I would like to correct his entry on the KIA listing. Please change "Louis Marchinek" to "Louis J. Marcinek." Once again thank you for keeping their story alive. We should be so lucky to remember and learn from our history. Shawn. OSC Shawn J. Marchinek, USCG District 13 (itc), Seattle WA • Thanks for the Attu KIA list and corrections. I zipped thru it and noticed some place name typos, if you are interested: Pedro Wooley, should be Sedro Wooley; Vancover needs a “u” Vancouver; Tappenish, Wask should be Toppenish, Wash; Memaphis should be Memphis; Alemeda, Calif. should be Alameda. It's great that relatives are finding your site and using it as it was intended! Clark Green •The name of the town for Milton Rugland should be ROSEAU, Minnesota instead of Roso. Thank you. I was born after the war, but I remember my dad talked about Milton and Attu. My dad was Earl Rugland, and he served in Europe during WWII. Connie Johnson •Gale Lewis from Winters, California should be: Cale Lewis. Thank you, Brenda Lewis Gervais, Cale's granddaughter. •My uncle's name was unfortunately misspelled on the headstone. It is also incorrectly spelled on the [this] web site list. I am attempting to correct these misspellings in his memory. Albert V. Giazzon, is the correct spelling. The name appears as Albert Giazon on the list. Guido Giazzon.
Many unclaimed remains, or those whose remains were directed to be re-interred in a National Cemetery in Alaska, were re-interred in one of two Alaskan cemeteries: Ft. Richardson (now JBER) National Cemetery located near Anchorage, AK, or the Sitka National Cemetery, Sitka, AK. We visited the Ft. Richardson cemetery on the 19th of July, 2015, recorded the event through videos and still cameras, and created a video of the event which we’ve uploaded to YouTube. One gravesite stood out from the rest, located at the front of the section where WWII remains were interred, is that of Foster Jones, killed on Attu after the Japanese invaded the island in 1942.
